New Hope Australia is a charitable organisation dedicated to providing care and support to underprivileged communities in rural India.
Who is New Hope Australia?
New Hope Australia is a charitable organisation dedicated to providing care and support to underprivileged communities in rural India.
Founded in 1985 by Eliazar T Rose and incorporated as an Australian registered charity in 2003, New Hope has provided decades of care and support to many of rural India’s most vulnerable and displaced people.
Eliazar has dedicated his life to helping India’s poorest and most vulnerable people. He gained qualifications as a Boilermaker at the Institute of Indian Technology, but chose to work in a Leprosy colony, gaining firsthand experience in medical and laboratory techniques and achieving registration as a Medical Practitioner in the field of Leprosy. Himself the son of Lepers, Eliazar vowed to fight Leprosy, poverty, literacy and many of the other challenges facing those living in poverty in rural India.
The New Hope Trust is based in the state of Orissa, in a Tribal area known as the Koraput District.
New Hope India has consistently reached out with an “Open Door” policy, to help anyone who comes to them in need. Leprosy sufferers, orphaned children, HIV AIDS women outcast by society, beggars; all are offered compassion and support.
All funds raised for New Hope help to provide aid and education to the vulnerable, including HIV+ orphans, physically and mentally challenged young adults, and those affected by leprosy and disease. Meals, medical care, shelter and education improve the lives of those in need and make a positive impact on their communities.
Our Aid
Leprosy
Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease, is a chronic infectious disease that affects the skin and peripheral nerves, leading to skin lesions, nerve damage, and deformities. Leprosy is treatable with antibiotics, but if left untreated, it can cause significant disability and disfigurement.
Leprosy has always been a primary focus of New Hope, providing medical intervention, mobility support and family aid for as long as it is required. Our Love Bundle program continues to be a great source of comfort and support for those in our care, and it has become a traditional gift item each Christmas. Each Bundle costs just $20.
A Love Bundle is a wonderful gift, providing practical items that are both cherished and useful to a Leprosy patient. For just $20, each one contains:
- Comb: Long and wide handle that is easy to hold as many of the aged leprosy patients have deformed hands.
- Pair of sandals: Velcro tape straps with inserts made from soft flexible rubber. The soles are tough recycled car tyre rubber. Each is made to fit as most of the aged have a serious foot deformity, preventing ulcers.
- Bright Indian sari for women: Sometimes swapped with other women to get the colour that ‘suits’ them.
- Traditional loongi for men: Men are just as enthusiastic to get a new ‘western’ shirt and the traditional loongi.
- Cotton bath towel.
- Soap, Scented powder.
- Hair oil and clips or sweets.
Tribal Support
There is a Tribal Community Centre just outside of Muniguda. This clinic is always open and very functional. We know who is expecting a child, and they are provided with a Safe Delivery Kit. Many now go to the local hospital for delivery, but because of the distances we still provide these kits.
We support a local Traditional Birth Attendant, and our reduced Infant Mortality Rate project over 20 years is incredible. Upgraded roads and tracks mean that many of the expectant woman from the tribal villages can now also come directly to the New Hope Community Centre.
$50 provides a Safe Delivery Kit and the services of a Traditional Birth Attendant for each expectant mother.
Nameste House
Initially founded as a facility for corrective surgery for Polio crippled children, Nameste House now provides a haven for mentally challenged and cerebral palsy children. Many of these children are orphaned.
We accept the care of these disabled and challenged children out of compassion and love, to protect them and to provide the necessary medical and social services.
$100 provides personal care and physiotherapy treatment for a challenged person at Namaste House.
Education
A comprehensive education is the first step in helping to break the cycle of dependency and poverty. For decades, New Hope has provided an education that is structured to suit both the interests and the capabilities of those in their care. Indian children work hard to achieve good grades in the hope of securing a place at college or university. Sponsorship provides them with the opportunity to realise their dream of a brighter future.
Formal Education and Vocational Training are possible through the generosity of sponsorship. $100 donated to the Education Fund ensures that we can continue to provide this life-enhancing gift.
Formal Education
Many of our young adults’ study Medicine and Education, thus providing the benefit of ongoing support to others within their communities and outer regional areas. They work hard to secure placement at a college or university, but can only proceed if they have the funds to do so.
Vocational Training
For those young adults unable to go on to college or university education, New Hope provides opportunities for them to learn life skills that will lead to brighter futures and self-sufficiency. The Vocational Training program has been a great success, leading to formal education, the creation of small businesses in the wider community, and the development of new relationships. It is a project of great importance for the future of our challenged young adults.
Some of the more popular courses are:
