Projects – New Hope Australia
With progress has come the necessity for change. To help facilitate the evolving demands on further education and support, New Hope India has incorporated a variety of sustainable projects.
Sustainability
Sustainability is hugely important in the New Hope community. It takes a lot of planning and commitment to maintain productivity. Planting rice seedlings and harvesting the crop, nurturing a calf until she can provide nourishing milk, installing and maintaining a drip irrigation system to water the vegetable garden and banana palms.
These things not only provide essential provisions for our community, but any surplus produce can be sold for extra income.
An important part of our policy is to encourage young people and village women living below the poverty line to embrace the methods of self-sustainability, and we support this ethos by paying them for their work.
Our sustainability projects include:
- Cow and Goat Herds
- Chicken Roost
- Rice Crops
- Garden – Vegetable and Flower Seeds
- LED Light Production
- Irrigation Systems
- Banana Plantation
- Coconut Orchard
Solar
India now encourages the development of solar technology, with emphasis on feeding the energy produced into the Government ‘Grid’ system. For New Hope, this means the opportunity to have a reliable and affordable source of electricity, as well as the benefit of financial gain from the excess energy produced by their solar panels.
Bee Hives
Bees are a vital part of India’s wellbeing. As well as their critical contribution to food security, they also provide honey, which is an important ingredient in Ayurvedic recipes and treatments.
Beehive maintenance is a job undertaken by some of the more senior students, those who have an interest in the maintenance and upkeep of the hives and bees. They receive instruction from more professional Beekeepers who are also committed to the importance of biodiversity.
Your donation will go a long way with assisting us to purchase protective clothing and other items for our Beekeepers.
OUTREACH AGED CARE
As with many Asian countries where poverty is prevalent, the aged are often caste out of their family homes or colonies, and forced to stay on street corners and beg for food. New Hope is providing nutritious meals and medical assistance to these elderly people as they congregate together and enjoy social interaction with one another.
This is a very successful outreach initiative that is maintaining vital connections of support within the community. $30 provides a nutritious meal each day for a month.
